WHAT IS EPCIS?

What is EPCIS?
The context behind an event.

EPCIS is a GS1 standard for sharing information about events in a supply chain. It gives systems a common structure for describing an event and its business context.

01 / THE WORKFLOW

Read the event as a business story.

An identifier tells you which item is involved. Event information adds context about an activity, its time and location, and the business situation. In an implementation, those fields need agreed meanings rather than merely matching names.

THE WORK, MADE VISIBLE

The same item can appear in several events.

Receiving and shipping are different activities even when they reference the same serialized item. An event-based model preserves the context of each activity. Read the product identifiers together with the event time, location and business meaning to understand what the record actually describes.

02 / THE WORKFLOW

An illustrative receiving example.

Imagine a distributor receives a serialized medicine at a warehouse. In your design review, identify the product record, receiving location and activity time. Then establish which upstream record the event relates to and what the next system should do with the information.

Make the information useful to the team.
  1. 01

    What happened?

Define the business activity and the records involved.

  2. 02

Where does the data come from?

Name the operational source and the owner of the reference information.

  3. 03

    How will it be used?

Describe the receiving system’s expected behavior and validation.

03 / THE WORKFLOW

Keep the version and partner specification together.

The current GS1 standard and a partner’s deployed interface may not use the same version. Record the actual implementation requirements and test payloads against that agreement.

04 / THE WORKFLOW

From explanation to implementation.

Use the concept to prepare a concrete integration brief: sample events, identifiers, formats, expected responses and exception scenarios. The most valuable demonstration follows a record from its source to its intended use.
